County, Floral City council commemorate historical marker

Citrus County Commissioner Rebecca Bays and county Visitors and Convention Bureau representatives met with the Floral City Heritage Council Friday to officially designate a significant place in the historic little village in southeast Citrus.
This time, the group unveiled an historic marker explaining how the Conquistador Hernando DeSoto stopped at an Indian camp named Tocaste on July 25, 1539, in Floral City before pushing on through Citrus on his way up the Florida Peninsula.
Council President Frank Peters told how the ruthless conquistador forcibly took all the Indian village’s food supplies before moving on. Citrus Visitors and Convention Bureau officials worked with the National Park Service to get the information kiosk county crews installed at the corner of the Duvall Island boat ramp parking area.
