The Citrus County Board of County Commissioners recently proclaimed May 15 through May 21 as Law Enforcement Appreciation Week and May 15 as Law Enforcement Day in Citrus County. Shown in the photo are, from left: Commissioner John "JJ" Kenney, Commissioner Rebecca Bays, Commissioner Joe Meek, Sheriff's Capt. Charlie Simmons, Commissioner Winn Webb, Capt. Doug Dodd, and Commission Chairman Dennis Damato.

Citrus County commissioners issued a proclamation on May 10 honoring all Citrus County law enforcement officers and recognizing May 15-21 as National Law Enforcement Appreciation Week.

The board further proclaimed Sunday, May 15, as National Law Enforcement Officer Memorial Day to remember those officers who, through their bravery and courageous deeds, made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their community or became disabled in the performance of their duty.

In addition, the proclamation recognizes and pays respect to the survivors and families of these fallen or disabled heroes.

The designations of May 15 and the calendar week in which that date falls have honored the law enforcement community since October 1962, when former President John F. Kennedy signed Public Law 87-726. Additionally, former President Bill Clinton signed Public Law 103-322 in September 1994, directing that the flag of the United States on all government buildings be lowered to half-staff on May 15, to commemorate all fallen and disabled law enforcement officers.

As stated in the commission’s proclamation, the deputies of the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office play an essential role in safeguarding the public’s rights and freedoms, and risk their lives daily to ensure that all citizens may live in a safe, secure environment. In addition, they work in partnership with the community to protect life and property, solve neighborhood problems and enhance the quality of life in Citrus County.

The community is asked to join in commemorating all Citrus County law enforcement officers, past and present, for their dedicated service and devotion to duty.
