A 60-year-old man has been arrested and faces child abuse charges in connection with a 15-year-old Crystal River boy.
Citrus County Sheriff's Office deputies on Monday arrested Johnny Ray Karr of Crystal River in connection with the case.
According to the arrest report, the boy's legal guardian, who was also Karr's girlfriend, called the CCSO to say that the boy and Karr had been out all night, and that she wanted deputies to pick the boy up. Deputies were able to contact both the boy and Karr.
The boy was turned over to his legal guardian, and Karr was evaluated after making suicidal statements.
The boy gave deputies a signed affidavit of what had happened. On Aug. 2, both and Karr had gone to the store for Karr to get cigarettes and beer, and cash a Social Security Check. After that, the boy went with Karr to Karr's friend's house in Crystal River, where that friend put Karr in contact with people who later came to the home who could help Karr get crack cocaine and prescription medications.
The boy told deputies Karr told him to go with one of the people who had come to the residence, then gave him $160 to buy 10 "Roxies". Karr is then said to have contacted a Hispanic man and woman at the residence, who took him to another location, where he is said to have bought crack cocaine.
Karr and the boy later met at a residence, and Karr and the other adults took the pills and smoked the crack cocaine. Later that night, Karr decided that he, the boy and the Hispanic man and woman would rent a hotel room in Homosassa at the Bella Oasis Hotel.
When Karr and the boy got into the hotel room, the boy said, Karr sent the boy back to Crystal River to buy more crack cocaine. When the boy got back, Karr smoked the crack cocaine and, at one point, Karr gave the boy a marijuana "blunt" and forced the boy to smoke it, the boy said.
Karr is then said to have told the boy that, if they got caught, the boy would go to jail, too.
Later that evening, Karr is said to have sent the boy and the Hispanic man and woman to the Citrus Springs area to buy more crack cocaine, as well as powder cocaine. The boy said that on the way back, the Hispanic man made him drive while the man and Hispanic woman consumed some of the cocaine.
Once back at the hotel, the boy said, he watched Karr chop up the powder cocaine into lines on top of the microwave, and saw Karr and the Hispanic man and woman snort the cocaine through a straw.
The next morning, Karr and the boy were transported back to Crystal River. But before arriving at that residence, the boy said they stopped again in Crystal River and bought some more crack cocaine for Carr. Once at the residence, the boy said, Karr again began smoking the crack cocaine until a deputy showed up at the residence looking for the boy.
The boy said that Karr had about $700 when he cashed his Social Security check, and the next morning had only $4.
On Aug. 5, a CCSO detective made contact with Karr in Ocala, read Karr his rights, and interviewed him.
Karr corroborated many of the statements made by the boy, and expressed remorse for his actions in front of the boy. He admitted to smoking crack cocaine, snorting lines of powder cocaine and taking prescription pills.
At the Citrus County jail, Karr was charged with child abuse, delivering a controlled substance to a minor and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Total bond was set at $5,500.
