A fire that started in the kitchen in an Inverness home on Monday quickly spread, ending in a total loss of the home.
Firefighters were dispatched to the blaze at 9434 E. Rivermoon Court, and arrived 14 minutes later, the fire report says.
The firefighters discovered an approximate 1.200-square foot single story wood construction residence fully involved in fire. In addition, the fire had spread to a truck, boat and single-wide mobile home which was being stored in the brush next to the residence. Firefighters deployed a defensive fire attack to extinguish. Fire operations included water shuttles due to lack of water supply in the area.
The occupant, Paul Beckom, said he had smelled smoke and then saw fire coming from his kitchen area. He quickly removed his roommate from the home and called the fire department. He advised his smoke detectors did not work.
The fire caused extensive damage to the home and appears to be a total loss. The damage to the approximate 1,200 square foot home, mobile home and other was estimated at $96,000 to the structure and $21,000 to the contents. The residence was not insured by the owner.
The actual cause of the fire is unknown.
Citrus County Fire Services reminds residents to test smoke alarms regularly. Test at least monthly: preferably weekly. Replace the batteries every six months and replace the fire alarm every 10 years.
