Citrus County’s Home Delivered Meals Program, a member of the Meals on Wheels Association of America (MOWAA), received a “March for Meals” grant in the amount of $1,100.
These grants were awarded to MOWAA members who participated in the “March for Meals” campaign.
“March for Meals” is an annual campaign sponsored by MOWAA each year in March, (the month Meals on Wheels was started). The purpose of “March for Meals” is to bring attention to the issues of senior hunger in America, fund raising for Meals on Wheels programs and the recruitment of volunteers.
Grant applicants were judged on their fund raising as well as obtaining volunteers and engaging their local officials in the campaign. Citrus County’s Home Delivered Meal Program raised more than $7,000 to provide meals to seniors in Citrus County by holding a Spring Fling Dance, seeking sponsors from the business community and receiving private donations from the community.
With the rising cost of food, gas, health care and prescription drugs, hunger is becoming more of an issue with seniors who are on fixed incomes. Citrus County’s Home Delivered Meal Program wants to help MOWAA with the national movement to “End Senior Hunger by 2020”.
In order to achieve this goal, help from communities across the nation is needed. For more information on how you can donate or volunteer, call 527-5975.
