A Homosassa man involved in a domestic dispute on July 12 was released today from the Seven Rivers Regional Medical Center following treatment from an incident in which he is said to have shot at, beat and choked his wife.
The Citrus County Sheriff's Office today arrested Joachim "Jack" Schulz, 70.
According to the arrest report, Schulz had been out drinking with friends on July 11 and taking what was called "excessive medication." He began arguing with his wife, Roberta Schulz, 72, when he returned home, and then started "bumping" and pushing his wife around the home, and once in the living room threw her to the floor and began beating her on the head and in the face, then choked her, the report says. He is also said to have jumped on her stomach and chest, and at one point produced a silver revolver and then beat her with it.
He is said to have then began choking her, and pointed the gun at her and dared her to call 9-11 when she reached for the telephone. He took the phone from her and broke it, the arrest report says. When she later crawled into the bathroom, she opened a window and started screaming through it. He then came in and started beating her, the arrest report says, beating her in the head and back with his fist and then the gun.
At one point, he is alleged to have fired the gun twice in the direction of her feet.
The arrest report adds that a short while later, the husband went into the kitchen, where deputies believe he took more medication. When his wife asked for something to drink, the arrest report said he told her, "You are not going to need any help, because you are going to die." The added that he would kill her, and them himself. As she crawled back to the bedroom and attempted to get onto the bed, he kept pushing her down to prevent her from getting up.
This continued for a while, until he eventually passed out on the side of the bed and fell to the floor. Coming to herself, she was able to escape from the bedroom, crawl out of the front door and then down the stairs on her rear end and then made it to her daughter's residence by crawling and attempting to walk, the arrest report says, and eventually found safety in her daughter's home.
Joachim then barricaded inside the family residence with multiple firearms on the premises, the CCSO said. The agency’s SWAT and crisis negotiation team members also were called out in an effort to establish contact with Schulz and bring the incident to a peaceful conclusion.
As the early morning hours of July 12 wore on, Joachim remained uncommunicative with officers. In the interest of public safety, the CCSO said, at least one nearby residence was evacuated. Not long before 6 a.m., tear gas was deployed inside the residence, and SWAT members made entry.
Jack Schulz was transported by ambulance to an area hospital as a result of exposure to the gas. His wife was transported to a different facility for further treatment of her injuries.
Roberta was treated for her injuries, and later released from Citrus Memorial Hospital, the CCSO said.
Joachim was charged with attempted murder, aggravated battery, felony battery, false imprisonment, aggravated assault and shooting inside an occupied dwelling.
His bond was set at none.
