Citrus County Sheriff's Office firefighters and deputies today responded to a residential fire that turned out to be deadly for an elderly Inverness woman.
CCSO dispatchers received a call at 11:33 a.m. about a house fire at 309 Hiawatha Ave. in Inverness, where the elderly female homeowner was trapped and calling for help.
Responding deputies and firefighters were able to get Clara Allen, 88, out of the single-family dwelling. She was transported to Citrus Memorial Health System with serious burns and subsequently succumbed to her injuries. Local family members were notified of Allen's death.
As a precaution, two Citrus County deputies also were transported to CMH and are being treated for smoke inhalation. A neighbor of Allen's was treated on scene for minor lacerations he received while trying to get the woman out of the house.
Both the state fire marshal and medical examiner's office were dispatched as well, and the scene has been turned over to the fire marshal for further investigation.
