The Citrus County Sheriff's Office has arrested an Inverness man for allegedly shaking an infant in a manner that caused serious injury to the now hospitalized 3-month-old baby.

Arrested was Shane Lee Adams, Jr., 19, of Inverness.

The baby, also from Inverness, has been transferred from Citrus Memorial Hospital in Inverness, where she had been admitted on Aug. 31, to All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg, where she remains under care.

According to Adams' arrest report, the CCSO learned the baby was inconsolable, could not keep any food down and couldn't focus or track anything with her eyes. Deputies also learned the symptoms were highly suspicious for abusive head trauma or shaken-baby syndrome.

CCSO detectives reviewed medical records from All Children's Hospital, and talked with medical staff there and with the baby's mother and others.

Detectives interviewed the mother, and she told them the baby was fine when she left the residence on Aug. 28. She said Adams had called her repeatedly telling her the baby wouldn't stop crying. She said when she did arrive home, she heard the baby's cries as she approached the front door.

The mother said she noticed the baby wouldn't smile as usual, was vomiting, couldn't keep any food down and couldn't focus her eyes.

Adams, who had previously been questioned by detectives, was called in for further questioning. After being read his rights, Adams told detectives he shook the baby out of frustration, because she wouldn't quiet down. He denied punching the baby, and said he didn't mean to seriously injure the baby, just make her stop crying.

Adams was charged with aggravated child abuse, and bond was set at none.

Adams is currently on felony probation. He had been arrested on Sept. 13, 2009 on a warrant for two counts of grand theft auto and two counts of petit theft.
