This is only the third time the institution has changed its name since it was established in 1957.
And today, Central Florida Community College (CFCC) was re-introduced as the College of Central Florida (CF).
An estimated 30 people were on hand at the college's Lecanto campus, as the name was revealed to attendees, and passing motorists along County Road 491.
"While our name has changed, our name remains the same," said Dr. Charles Dassant, CF president.
"We will continue to provide access to a reasonably priced, quality education, and to promote the social, cultural and economic development of the Central Florida region."
The college celebrated the new name today with unveiling ceremonies at the Citrus County campus, the Hampton Center and Ocala campus. The Levy County campus will observe the name change at official ceremonies on at 9 a.m. on Wednesday in Chiefland.
The name change follows a yearlong process that included a survey of the community, approved by the CFCC Board of Trustees and the State Board of Education. During the five-week survey, 580 distinct names were sorted from 1,480 submissions.
