Greta the pit bull terrier has proven that a little help from friends can go a long way.

According to Citrus County Animal Services Veterinarian Dr. Julie Rosenberger, Greta is recovering fine from hip surgery after citizens donated money to the Dorothy Angel Fund for the surgery.

Greta was brought to the animal shelter with fractured right and left legs a few months ago. Those continue to heal, Rosenberger said, and he added that the effort to help Greta has also helped two other dogs.

“Through the generous donations to the Dorothy Angel Fund at Midway, we have also had surgery to repair a broken left ankle on Axle, a 3-month old chow mix puppy. Axle has been adopted by a family that will continue his physical therapy and follow-up visits to Dr. K.C. Nayfield.”

The donations stretched even further, she said. “Additionally, we have a young female mix breed that came in hit-by-car with head trauma and neurologic deficits. Her name is Miracle, and in the two weeks since her arrival, she has gone from near paralysis to nearly recovered, with steroids, a little TLC, and physical therapy. Thanks to the donations to the Angel Fund at Dunnellon Animal Hospital, an X-ray last week showed a fracture of her C2 vertebrae. At this point, we will allow her to continue healing herself, and she is up for adoption.”

Donations to the fund allow injured pets like Greta and Axle to get advanced veterinarian attention. Anyone wishing to donate to the fund to provide advanced care such as surgery that’s not possible at the shelter can call 726-7660 for information.

The Animal Services facility is open from Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. except Thursdays, when it is open to 7 p.m., and on Saturday 10 to 3 p.m. (adoptions stop an hour before closing time on weekdays).

Dogs and cats may be adopted for $20, but that can be less due to the animal’s age. Other costs due at time of adoption can range from $30 to $100. This cost is determined by:

  • Whether it is a cat or a dog
  • If it is female or male
  • Weight and age
  • The veterinarian that the adopter chooses
  • If it is already spayed or neutered
  • If it needs a rabies vaccination, heartworm test, feline leukemia test, feline leukemia/aids combo test, de-worming, puppy/dog vaccination or kitten/cat vaccinations
