Dominic Giacobbe
Citrus County Sheriff's Office authorities just received notification from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement that the subject involved in the fatal shooting incident early Monday morning in Crystal River is Dominic Giacobbe, 26, address unknown.
After deputies confronted Giacobbe, he brandished a weapon, a large knife, and the K-9 handler released K-9 deputy Mito to help apprehend the suspect.
Giacobbe stabbed K-9 deputy Mito, then charged deputies with the knife. Deputy Todd Cridland fired the shot that killed Giacobbe. Deputy Cridland was put on paid leave while the incident is investigated, which is standard practice for such incidents.
K-9 Deputy Mito remains in the care of a veterinarian, and although he has an infection, he is being carefully monitored by the staff.
Giacobbe did serve prison time in Florida, according to the state Department of Corrections. Records indicate Giabobbe was released from prison on Dec. 17, 2003, having served 3 years and 23 days for a 2000 offense of "battery by detainee." His given address upon release was 199 DIX AV.CE WAY #2, Ormond, Fla.
Next-of-kin notification has been made.
