Suncoast Parkway 2 project may not yet be dead

Dixie Hollins, president, Citrus County Chamber of Commerce, asks the county commission on Tuesday to do what it can to move the stalled Suncoast Parkway project back to the front burner.

Following a plea by Citrus County Chamber of Commerce President Dixie Hollins, it was revealed on Tuesday that the state has not yet declared the Suncoast Parkway project dead.

County Commission Chairman John Thrumston told members of the commission that he had spoken with officials in the state's department of transportation, and has arranged for a meeting next week with county commissioners.

Thurmston said representatives of the FDOT will also make a presentation to the county commission in the next two months or so. Hollins said he was concerned about the apparent suspension of the Parkway project, especially in light of the number of people who will come with the construction of the nuclear power plant in Levy County.

"I'm concerned that this has been put on hold or stopped," he told commissioners.

Dixie Hollins: Resurrect Parkway

Parkway

A boondoggle

What purpose will this road serve? Anyone who drives on the current parkway knows there is very little traffic on it in Hernando County, and not much more in Pasco County. Does anyone think it will be more heavily used in lightly populated Citrus County?

As I understand it, the parkway extension was, hopefully, going to allow people to work in counties south of us and live here. It's highly doubtful that's going to happen. And the increased home building to go along with that is doubtful, too. There are no jobs. None in CC. None in Tampa. And just how many people are going to want to commute 1+ hr a day each way?

Is it going to relieve traffic on US19? Doubtful. Most of the traffic on US19 is LOCAL TRAFFIC. Are people going to hop on the parkway to drive from Chassahowitzka to Crystal River? Sugarmill Woods to Crystal River? Of course not. They're going to take US19---because it's FREE.

Is it a good thing to encourage those who actually ARE passing through to do so at 70mph? NO. We should encourage those people to drive through Homosassa/Crystal River at a slow pace. Maybe they'll stop and buy gasoline. Maybe they'll go to one of our local restaurants. They'll stop at a local store and buy some crafts.

The Parkway is going to irreversibly change our county, and not for the better.

Re "Boondoggle"

Anyone thinking against the extension of the parkway through to Hwy 19, is being very short-sighted. The real benefit probably lies beyond your lifetime. As a newbie to Florida, I have no idea when many of the steets of Clearwater, Pinellas Park, St Pete and surrounding area were designed and laid out. I can tell you this much: There could not have been much need back then for the very wide streets they enjoy today. A few may have been widened after the fact, but looking at the various streets down there, it had to be they were planned that way in the beginning. I wonder how many people from that era are still alive? It's the driving public of this era, many years later who enjoy the visions of generation, or two, past. So it is with the parkway. Buy the land now (if not already bought), create the required bridges and get it built. When the time comes to be needed, it will be there. And what better route does the Tampa - St Pete area need to evacuate in case of a hurricane? Those who think ill of extending the parkway are probably in the last third (or less) of their expected lifetime. Extending the parkway is NOT for you. Instead, it is for those coming up behind you: A younger generation and those who follow. It's called planned progress.

Citrus County is not Pinellas/Pasco/Hillsborough

The intent of the parkway is to
A) Give Citrus County residents a speedy route to counties south of us

B) Give people travelling from Tampa to points north a speedy route to north of Crystal River, bypassing Citrus County.

Citrus County will never be as busy as Tampa/St. Petersburg/Clearwater. There is no industry here, and no hope for any. And that's a good thing. The lifeblood of Citrus County used to be agriculture. That was supplanted by retirees. Retirees like Citrus County because it's a peaceful rural county.

I'm 35. You're quite incorrect in your assumption.

The Parkway is not intended to, nor shall it(if completed), relieve traffic on US19. Anyone who thinks it will is not thinking clearly. US19 is the commercial corridor of the western side of the county. Therefore, people will continue to drive on it. Are you expecting that massive growth will follow the path of the Parkway? Doubtful. Large sections of it are slated to pass through areas which are already developed---and the exits are close to residential areas. Do you think there will be strip malls built at the Crystal Oaks exchange? Doubt the residents there will go for it. Pine Ridge?

It's not for the benefit of the county. It's to encourage people to bypass us. Why would we want that?

Parkway Extension

Are you Kidding?

A BILLION DOLLARS? for a road to no where?.....Pardon me.....it does go somewhere.....It empties or starts at Guess Who's Property....and might add the President of the Chamber of Commerce....Dixie Hollins....the property owner most likely to benefit from the parkway.....Gee a coincodence? Nah.... I would hate to think the Taxpayers are stupid enough to think there is any concieveable way this parkway might be a benefit...let me see ....To business....cars and trucks pass faster....past Crystal River and Hommossa.....to the residents.....well 10mph faster to Tampa....for a Billion Dollars....are you kidding? How much will your Grandkids endure? Please Vote a No-Build....Put the Pressure on the Idiots with no reason......Thanks

parkway extension

i go to tampa every month, and i dont take the parkway, except once when it opened. i like to make stops along the way. i dont know why anyone doesn't mention the obvious, besides; its not doing any good as it stands. if any money is going to be spent to traffic needs, it should first be spent on widening 491, 41 & 200; to ease the amount of traffic. eventually not matter what happens, widening on those 3 has to be done anyway. why wait till its too late. look at the data. if its really necessary to put a road to no-where, then it should run along the east side of 491, then up to dunnellon. it would make a lot more sense and easier for traffic to be dispersed in all directions. i really think that the smarts behind this, has to be replaced with smarter people. and sadly, the first part of the parkway should have been closer to brooksville and more along 491.

from no where to somewhere

I think that thay should go threw with it but dont end it off in the middle of nowhere i say thay turn it and make it head up to ocala to me that makes scence
