Both the Citrus County Department of Public Works and Citrus County Mosquito Control are cleaning up an 11-acre site in Crystal River that is overrun with trash.
The site is located along North Nightshade Drive in Crystal River.
On Dec. 6, the Citrus County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) approved a measure to correct the ongoing public nuisance after a request from Mosquito Control for the board’s help to stop a persistent mosquito problem on the property. This cleanup is a direct result from a request from Mosquito Control to help alleviate a potentially dangerous situation from breeding mosquitos in the area.
The illegal dump originated from a single individual who accumulated significant amounts of junk. The owner of the property died several years ago and none of the trash was cleaned up.
Commissioner John “JJ” Kenney visited the site to watch the progress and talk with some of the workers. Right now, there are five county workers, with various heavy equipment, trying to collect and dispose of all the trash.
The site should be cleared within the next two weeks.
