CFCC Global Conversations Series begins in October in Ocala

OCALA - Central Florida Community College will present its Global Conversations Series in October.

"From Southern India to Angkor Wat: The Spread of Hindu and Buddhist Culture" is a visual and textual exploration of Hindu and Buddhist traditions. It will be held Sunday, Oct. 4, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the Appleton Museum of Art of Central Florida Community College, 4333 E. Silver Springs Blvd., Ocala.

The lecture is free and there is a separate fee to view the museum collections. The program will be repeated on Monday, Oct. 5, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Webber Center at the Ocala Campus, 3001 S.W. College Road, Ocala. There is no fee to attend the presentation at CFCC.

"From Southern India" will feature the photographs and writings of Dr. Vasudha Narayanan, professor of religion and founder and director of the Center for Hindu Traditions at the University of Florida; Dr. V. Chellamal, CFCC Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence, Anna University, Chennai, India; and Patrick Fleming, CFCC professor and Fulbright Scholar to India and China who traveled to Angkor Wat in Cambodia this past July.

"Angkor Wat is the world's largest religious temple and is recognized as one of the eight wonders of the modern world. What few people know is that its religious and architectural source emanates from the Hindu and Buddhist traditions of southern India; in particular, Kanchipurum and Mahabalipurum," Fleming said. "This presentation will develop these linkages through the eyes and lenses of residents and visitors to both countries."

The CFCC Global Conversation Series is designed to integrate with collegewide dialog around learning themes and classroom activity and infuses the perspectives of global understanding throughout campus life. This series is being held in conjunction with "Face of Asia: Steve
McCurry Photographs" exhibit at the Webber Center Gallery.

Additional events in the series are "Beijing's Tiananmen Square at 20 Years and Xi'an's Terra Cotta Warriors at Two Centuries" with Fleming on Tuesday, Oct. 27, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Webber Center; and "Faces of Asia at CFCC," a presentation by Ramona Kirsch, Fulbright Scholar and CFCC director of International Education, on Tuesday, Oct. 27, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Webber Center.
