Sheriff's deputies investigate Thursday night shooting

The Citrus County Sheriff's Office is looking into a shooting on Thursday night involving a 17-year-old Crystal River boy.

According to the arrest report, the youth is thought to have fired a .22-caliber rifle into a black Chrysler 300 carrying three adults. One of the adults, Tavin Devaughn, 20, of Dunnellon, was injured in the left inner thigh and was treated at Seven Rivers hospital.

Also in the vehicle with DeVaughn were Traske Johnson, 20, of Crystal River; and Kareen McKinnon, 20, also of Crystal River. Following the incident, the trio of 20-year-olds went in their vehicle to the CCSO's Crystal River substation to report the incident.

DeVaughn told a deputy that the incident grew out of a fight earlier in the day in front of Crystal River High School. DeVaughn said someone told him that one of the pugilists wanted to fight again and that he followed the pugilist to the area of Northwest 17th Court and Northwest 18th Street to contact the other pugilist.

Once at the location, DeVaughn said, he heard shots ring out and his vehicle was struck by bullets. He identified the shooter as the 17-year-old suspect who was arrested on Thursday. After that, he said, they left the area and went to the sheriff's substation in Crystal River to report the incident.

Damage to the vehicle included a bullet hole in the right-front headlight and fender, a bullet-strike mark on the hood and a bullet hole in the windshield next to the right-front pillar.

After being read his rights, the suspect said the three 20-year-olds had gotten out of their vehicle and popped the trunk, and that he went inside and grabbed a lever-action .22-caliber rifle. He said that he later heard what he throughout was a "pop" as the trio walked down the street, like someone had shot a small .25-caliber pistol.

He said he fired about 10 shots in the trio's general direction, but that he didn't intend to hit them.

The youth was arrested and was later transported to the juvenile assessment center.

It is unknown if he will be charged as an adult on the felony charges. He would face charges of aggravated battery using a deadly weapon and firing into an occupied vehicle.
