The Citrus County Sheriff's Office has solved a string of air conditioning thefts in Crystal River.

CCSO deputies on Tuesday arrested Terreius D. Chambers, 27, of 846 S.E. Eighth Ave., Crystal River, and charged him with 13 counts of grand theft in connection with the thefts, all of which occurred at many of that city's businesses.

Chambers is thought to be the one who either stole air conditioners at those businesses, or who stole parts from those air conditioners. The first report of theft occurred on Jan. 17 at the businesses of Specialty Gems and ERA Suncoast Realty, both of which reportedly had the fans and fan motors stolen from their air conditioners.

On Jan. 18 Nature Coast Orthopedics reported to the CCSO that three of their air conditioning units were stripped of their fans, copper and radiators. Estimated damage was set at $5,000. Then, on Jan. 24, several other businesses reported on Jan. 24 the theft of their air conditioning units' fans and fan motors, totaling an estimated $9,000.

While investigating, CCSO deputies discovered a video of the suspect, who was seen in surveillance footage wearing a blue hoodie and pushing a shopping cart in the direction of Southeast Eighth Avenue. Detectives investigated, and found what appeared to be shopping cart wheel tracks that cut through a wooded area from that street and led to the Ridgeview Apartments on that street.

The investigation led deputies to the front of Chambers' apartment, where a shopping cart had been parked. Since Chambers was deaf, deputies had to communicate with him through writing. After being shown a pre-printed card with the Miranda rights on them, Chambers said that it was he that deputies had seen in the video footage, which also included a scene where the suspect in the blue hoodie reaching into an air conditioning unit to cut the wires.

After being booked and questioned at the Citrus County jail, Chambers was released on his on recognizance.
