Florida Congresswoman Ginny Brown-Waite on Sunday night voted against the latest incarnation of the health care bill making the rounds on Capitol Hill.
House Democratic leaders held the majority caucus together, passing the Senate version of the healthcare legislation, 219-212, after weeks of arm-twisting and politicking. Thirty-four Democrats opposed the bill, as did all Republicans.
Waite said she that despite the outcome, she was confident the "will of American citizens will eventually prevail."
“The result of tonight’s vote is certainly not the outcome that I or millions of Americans had hoped for," Brown-Waite said in a statement on Sunday night. However, I am confident the will of the great citizens of America will eventually prevail. Tonight, Democrats caved to Speaker Nancy Pelosi instead of standing with their constituents. This is not the democracy that our founding fathers had intended.
“Passage of this bill will increase health care premiums, increase our national debt and raise taxes on virtually every American. Our seniors will see a reduction in their benefits and patients will see the relationship they currently have with their doctor deteriorate; instead of a doctor they will find a bureaucrat—or worse yet, an IRS agent.
“I have appreciated hearing from tens of thousands of my constituents on this issue. Tonight is not the end: I will continue to stand with you in the fight against the government takeover of healthcare. This is the people’s house and we must not let Speaker Pelosi forget that."
Earlier Sunday evening, Congresswoman Brown-Waite spoke out against the Democrats’ health care bill on the Floor of the House of Representatives. To view that video, click here.
Gov. Charlie Crist, who is also running for U.S. Senate, also voiced his concern about the passage of the legislation. "“It is disappointing to see that President Obama and Democrat leadership convinced enough members of their party, including Rep. Meek, to completely ignore the will of the American people, and pass their government run health care bill," Crist said in a statement released on Sunday night. “This bill is comprised of secret backroom, sweetheart deals, includes a last minute Executive Order, and the passage of such a bill is a direct affront to the American people.
“Americans deserve better than this liberal, partisan legislation that amounts to a government take over of health care while raising rates, raising taxes, and significantly cutting Medicare."
